Project Proposal
Background

The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) is the sixth MRT line introduced to the train network. Stage 4 of the TEL line comprises eight stations such as Tanjong Katong, Marine Parade and Siglap, and is expected to open in 2024. These stations are located along the Central and East region of Singapore and will provide commuters in the eastern portion of Central and East region with new access to the train network.
Motivation

We were excited to have the opportunity to apply our geospatial analytics skills to assess the value add of the new Thomson-East Coast MRT Line Stage 4 to Singapore’s transport development.
Our team wanted to compare the catchment area (according to the 5-10 minute walking distance) of the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line Stage 4 stations with the closest existing MRT stations in the East region of Singapore. By analyzing the different catchment areas of each TEL Stage 4 station, it also provided insight on the different building categories each station serves.
Through further analysis, we were able to deduce the number of residents that TEL station: Tanjong Katong serves. Which is the station that serves the most densely populated residential area amongst all of the TEL Stage 4 stations. Using this information and method, we were able to compare it with the number of residents other existing stations such as Tampines East MRT station serve.
Additionally, we hope to create awareness regarding the purpose of these newly launched MRT stations and to motivate people to seek the agenda of these new government initiatives.
Objective
The objective of our project is to help the public to better understand how the implementation of the new Thomson-East Coast MRT Line Stage 4 stations will serve their community by analyzing the different establishments within a 5-10 minutes walking distance from each station.
